Service log
A new hydraulic power-steering pump was fitted Nov 2025 (City Auto Center, ≈$800, fresh fluid — see the Power steering row under Service notes). If the wheel feels heavy or stiff at low, parking-lot speeds — where the hydraulic assist is worked hardest — the timing points at the install rather than the truck. Triage, cheapest first:
- Air in the system — the usual culprit after a pump R&R. Weak or juddery assist, a whine/groan, and foamy fluid in the reservoir. Re-bleed: correct level cold, engine off, turn lock-to-lock slowly ~10–15×, recheck, then repeat at idle (don't hold against full lock). A vacuum bleed clears it best.
- Fluid — spec & level. Confirm the LR-spec PAS fluid was used and the reservoir is at level; a generic ATF top-up or a low fill reads as stiff.
- Belt & priming. A slipping or mis-routed serpentine belt (or a tired tensioner) gives assist that's worst at low rpm; a pump not primed before first start can airlock.
- Suction-side air leak. A loose clamp or a wrong/kinked low-pressure feed hose draws air in continuously — it never bleeds out. Check the hoses that were disturbed.
- The pump itself. Reman/aftermarket units are sometimes weak or faulty out of the box (flow-control / relief valve). If the above check out, gauge its pressure and flow.
- Debris from the old pump. If the original shed metal when it failed, it can clog the reservoir filter or foul the rack's valve — a new pump won't fix that. Inspect and flush if needed.
Narrowing it: whine + foamy reservoir ⇒ air/fluid (top of the list); dead-quiet but heavy ⇒ lean toward pump output or the steering rack.
- PAS fluid: Land Rover genuine STC50519 — Pentosin CHF 11S spec (CHF 202-compatible). This is the fluid the “confirm the LR-spec PAS fluid was used” bullet points at; a generic ATF top-up is not a substitute. (High confidence — STC50519 is the fluid listed for the LR4 5.0 across LR parts catalogues.)
- Serpentine (primary drive) belt: Land Rover LR190101, which supersedes the older LR064185 for the naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 (2010–2013 LR4 / Range Rover / Sport) — order LR190101. (High confidence on the number; confirm supersession + qty at the counter against the VIN before buying.)
Annual PA state safety inspection + emissions inspection — both passed. State inspection $22.99, emissions inspection $59.99 (balance to tax/fees). New windshield stickers issued; emissions valid through Jul 2027. Service advisor Nick Ferry; technician Bernie Johnson. Invoice #36391 (work order #46091); windshield stickers.
Deferred / recommended at this visit (not performed): front disc brake pads & rotors, brake-fluid system flush, fuel-injection flush cleaning, cooling-system fluid flush. The cooling-system item is worth watching — it tracks the L319 platform's known weak-coolant-system reputation, the same failure family as the 2017 water-pump replacement below.
Water-pump replacement (C/S "check vehicle water pump is leaking → replaced the leaking water pump") plus regular lube/oil/filter change. Service advisor Steve Heath Jr (#1236). Parts: water pump (LR073711, $257.05), oil-cooler tube (LR028136, $34.73), oil-cooler seal (LR030593, $12.96), cooling fluid (LRN2279, $22.50). Oil change: filter LR011279 ($44.49) + 9 qt Castrol Edge Pro 5W-20 ($80.91). Total before discount $1,007.32, less 10% misc-coupon $80 = $927.32. Inspection: brakes 12/32 front + rear; tires 10/32 front + rear. Invoice 105289.
State of the vehicle at this point: barely 28k mi — well within Land Rover's normal-driver mileage band. The water pump failure at 28k is consistent with the L319/Discovery 4 platform's known weak-coolant-system reputation (water pumps + thermostats are recurring failures across LR4 service forums). Catching it before overheat damage = good outcome.

MTA Bridges & Tunnels E-ZPass Transponder Interior windshield toll tag · Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority · active
Interior-windshield E-ZPass on-board transponder (white MTA B&T tag in a black silicone sleeve), assigned to the LR4. Issued by the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority (MTA Bridges and Tunnels) — remains their property.
Steward note: tag is account-linked — moving it between vehicles is fine (the account is billed, not the car), but keep this serial paired to the LR4 here so plate/tag reconciliation stays clean. Manage the account at ezpassny.com.
PA vs NY — no functional difference: this is a New York (MTA) tag, but E-ZPass is a single interoperable network (~19 states) — it pays the same tolls on the PA Turnpike and every out-of-state crossing that a PA-issued tag would. Issuing state only matters for residency discount plans: NY's Staten Island / Verrazzano resident discounts require a NY tag (not applicable here), and PA has no equivalent lock-in. A separate PA Turnpike E-ZPass (serial G4*00603459979*, on the F-250 record) is also kept active (~$3/yr) as belt-and-braces — functionally interchangeable with this one.

Owner-forum case study
A distillation of one LR4 owner thread — “my LR4 experiences … mechanical issues that keep piling up” — where a 2013 owner at 60k mi lists a run of repairs and asks whether he’s an outlier, and longer-term owners answer. Everything below is reported owner experience, attributed to forum posters — not manufacturer spec, guaranteed fault rates, or advice specific to this VIN. It’s kept here because the systems the thread keeps returning to are the same weak points flagged in the maintenance assessment above, and because the through-line is useful: this truck rewards proactive support over reactive.
Cooling system — the “Achilles’ heel” of the 5.0 V8
- Do the coolant crossover pipes with the water pump. Owners flag this as the single biggest “bites you later” item — the intake has to come off to reach the pipes anyway, so pairing them with a water-pump job saves a second teardown. A good shop should have offered this coupling; several report theirs did not.
- Skip the OEM plastic crossover pipes. One owner reports the factory pipes are plastic and points to a third-party company making a better (metal) replacement “found in the forum” — named only as a third party in the thread, not identified here.
- Water pump is a “when, not if.” Reported as normal wear (the thread starter’s was replaced; another owner has done pump + crossover pipes + more). Owners treat cooling as preventive spend because an overheat failure is described as “prohibitive.”
- Engine oil cooler can leak. One owner needed an oil-cooler replacement to cure an oil leak — and it took two shop visits (one to find the source, one to fix it). Called “not out of the ordinary but also not common.”
Air suspension & steering
- Control-arm bushings wear early. The liquid-filled bushings that give the cushy ride don’t last long on a heavy truck; owners note solid-rubber or polyurethane replacements last longer at the cost of extra noise/harshness (NVH). Front control arms came up repeatedly.
- Expect the air compressor around this mileage. One owner had the air-suspension compressor replaced at ~60k mi and lists it as a likely “next up” repair for others near that point.
- Air struts are a wear item. Reported replaced on some trucks; one owner notes their rear air shocks are still original (“that’s love”) — so lifespan varies.
- A suspension-sensor warning can appear without a component fault. The thread starter saw a suspension sensor light with no actual problem in the suspension components — worth a proper read before replacing parts.
Timing chain / tensioner
- Watch the tensioner past ~80k mi. Owners cite a timing-chain tensioner defect that can need attention around 80k+; the popular belief blames stretched-out oil-change intervals, though at least one owner isn’t convinced that’s the root cause. Another reports their chains are simply fine — so it’s a risk to monitor, not a certainty.
- 2013 got a redesign. Owners note the 2013 model year carries a (debatable) timing-chain guide/tensioner redesign and commands a price premium for it — relevant context for a 2011, which predates it.
Body, brakes & routine wear
- Rear hatch trouble and sunroof drains both come up as expected items to stay on top of.
- Routine consumables are the bulk of it. Owners list rotors and pads, tie rods, alignments, and transmission flushes as normal maintenance rather than defects.
- Electrical was a non-event for these owners. Despite the marque’s reputation, one owner reports having had no electrical issues at all — offered as reassurance, not a guarantee.
What it costs, in owners’ numbers
- Owners doing their own wrenching quote roughly $0.10/km (~13¢/mi) in maintenance — versus ~$0.06/km for a Honda — and reckon it roughly doubles if a shop turns the wrenches. One heavily-repaired truck ran to ~29¢/mi over 170k mi (a >$10k engine swap included).
- One owner’s reframing worth keeping: buy a few-year-old “creampuff,” then drive the wheels off it for the long term — depreciation-plus-maintenance netted them ~$235/month and “very happy.”
Takeaway for this truck: the cooling system (pump + metal crossover pipes, done together), air-suspension fixtures (compressor, struts, control-arm bushings), and the timing-chain tensioner are the jobs to plan and pre-stock for — not to be surprised by. And the owners are near-unanimous that a Rover left to sit deteriorates faster than one that’s driven.

Perspective
The case study above is the “what” — the specific systems that surface again and again. This is the “how to hold it”: the owner mindset that turns a 2011 LR4 from a string of nasty surprises into a planned, ownable machine. Distilled from the same thread, as reminders rather than rules.
- Drive it, don’t baby it. The single most repeated owner point: low-mileage “street queens” suffer failure after failure while worked trucks go further on the same parts. Seals and bushings want to be used — a Rover left to sit deteriorates faster than one that’s driven.
- Get ahead of the known failures — don’t chase them. Cooling (pump + metal crossover pipes), air-suspension fixtures (compressor, struts, control-arm bushings), and the timing-chain tensioner are predictable. Plan and pre-stock for them; a failure met on the bench is a fraction of one met on the roadside.
- Couple the jobs. When the intake is already off for the water pump, do the crossover pipes in the same teardown. Paying labour twice for parts that share access is the avoidable half of the cost — a good shop offers the coupling, and if yours doesn’t, ask.
- Keep the platform’s weak fixtures on the shelf. The parts owners name over and over are cheap relative to the downtime of sourcing them mid-repair. Known-weak fixtures on hand turn a two-visit fix into one.
- Budget the real number, then stop flinching. Owners put DIY upkeep near ~13¢/mi, roughly double with a shop. That’s the deal. The owners who are happy are the ones who bought a sorted “creampuff” and drove the wheels off it — amortising a great truck over years rather than fighting each invoice.
A stance, not a warranty. Every item here is community sentiment distilled from the forum thread linked in the case study above — held as reminders for supporting this specific truck, not as guaranteed outcomes.
