First descale (Saturday 15 Aug 2026) with DeLonghi EcoDecalk via the machine's descale cycle. Next due 15 Feb 2027 (6-month cadence — New Hope water is moderately hard). This is descaling, not the weekly brew-head clean — see the two-jobs breakdown under Community knowledge.

Descaling ≠ cleaning — two different jobs, two different products
The single most-confused point of maintenance: a coffee-oil cleaning tablet will not descale, and a descaler will not clean the brew head. They are chemical opposites — one acidic, one detergent — and the machine has a separate cycle for each.
Dissolves calcium/magnesium scale in the boiler + water lines. Needs an acid. This is what the machine's "Descale" indicator is asking for. Every 3–6 months (New Hope water is moderately hard).
Use: DeLonghi EcoDecalk (spare parts ↗ · Amazon ↗, ~$15/bottle, ~6 descales) or a citric-acid / vinegar DIY. Not a cleaning tablet.
Dissolves rancid coffee oil + residue in the brew head + 3-way solenoid. Needs a detergent, run as a backflush with the blind portafilter. Weekly.
Use: DeLonghi Eco-MultiClean ↗, Cafiza tablets ↗, or any generic "coffee-maker cleaning tablet" (e.g. the WoldoClean tub in the drawer) — provided it fits the blind basket. Not a descaler.
Rule of thumb: indicator light on → descale (acid). Weekly ritual / oily taste → clean (detergent).
The high-leverage maintenance ritual
- Descale every 3-6 months with DeLonghi EcoDecalk (or vinegar-based DIY) — hard-water mineral build-up in the boiler is the #1 cause of premature failure on La Specialista machines
- Backflush the brew head weekly with the included blind portafilter + ~1 tsp DeLonghi Eco-MultiClean (or Cafiza tablets) — keeps the brewing chamber + 3-way solenoid valve clean
- Empty + rinse drip tray daily — stagnant water grows mold + corrodes the stainless
- Wipe steam wand immediately after each milk steam — dried milk inside the wand is a pain to clean out + the steam jet pinholes clog
- Grinder calibration — adjust the burr setting (top dial 1-8) when changing beans; pressure gauge "Optimal Zone" is the visual feedback loop
Common Arte Evo issues
- Pressure low / channeling — usually grind too coarse, dose too low, or tamp uneven. Tune the top grinder dial finer + check tamp pressure
- "Descale" indicator triggered — runs every ~200 shots typically; need to do the descale cycle, can't ignore (machine starts limiting pump pressure)
- Steam wand weak / sputtering — clogged jets (descale + clean) or the boiler hasn't fully ramped to steam temp (wait for the steam indicator light)
- Grinder won't dispense — beans stuck in chute; tap the hopper, brush down, or the dose-level dial is misaligned
- Cold brew mode not flowing — needs a particular grind size + specific puck prep; consult the manual section on cold-brew specifically (this is a less-used mode on the Arte Evo and has its own quirks)

- Eco-MultiClean detergent — for backflushing the brew head, ~$15 / bottle
- Replacement portafilter basket (single + double, pressurized + non-pressurized) — ~$20 each
- Water filter cartridge (built-in tank) — replace every 2-3 months, ~$10 each
- Burr grinder set (when worn, typically 5+ years) — ~$80 from DeLonghi parts
- Brew gasket — wear part, ~$8, eventually leaks if not replaced (visible water under the brew head = replace)
